SMU DataArts
Job Description
SMU DataArts, the National Center for Arts Research at Southern Methodist University, invites applications for a post-doctoral fellowship, to begin June 2024 for a 1-year term. This fellowship opportunity is for a researcher interested in leveraging data and research tools towards advancing gender equity in the field of arts and culture. The fellow should have a stated interest in the arts and culture sector; however, candidates with a wide range of degrees would be considered for this position, including economics, statistics, data science, public policy, museum studies, gender studies, etc. Potential topics to explore could include the impacts of female leadership on organizational performance and outcomes in museums, developing benchmarks for artist compensation by museums and providing case studies for organizations successfully balancing artist compensation with sustainability, and/or other gender-focused explorations of DataArts resources.
This fellow would collaborate closely with the SMU DataArts research team with mentorship and a direct reporting line to the Research Director of DataArts. The research team would help connect the fellow with research colleagues as appropriate, including national funders, arts service organizations, academic researchers, and practitioners. The fellow would be encouraged to publish the results of their investigations on multiple platforms – including peer-reviewed publications, through the SMU DataArts website, and through webinars or conferences.
As a national nexus of data on the arts and culture sector, SMU DataArts is uniquely positioned to offer a springboard for a fellow to explore these types of inquiries. SMU DataArts employs a range of research techniques and high-powered computing to test hypotheses, build theory, and increase understanding of the arts and culture sector. Our research efforts range from academic papers published in leading journals, applied research undertaken with community partners, and actionable insights shared directly with arts practitioners.
The benefits to participants of this program include practical experience through every phase of the research process, an expansion of available networks and connections, and publication opportunities to strengthen job applications.
