Multiple Postdoctoral Positions Available in the Bioinformatics and Systems Medicine Laboratory (BSML)

Dr. Zhongming Zhao’s Bioinformatics and Systems Medicine Laboratory (BSML) at the Center for Precision Health, McWilliams School of Biomedical Informatics, The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth), is seeking highly motivated postdoctoral researchers to join an established bioinformatics team. Research Focus

Ongoing projects in the lab include:

Deep learning applications in aging, cancer, and precision medicine.

Functional genomics study of complex disease by deep learning.

Next-generation sequencing (NGS) and single-cell omics studies.

Translational and clinical bioinformatics.

Funding and Opportunities

These positions are supported by funding from multiple NIH grants (U01, R01s), CPRIT grants, the Vice President's Office for Cancer Genomic Medicine, among others. Funding is secured for 3+ years, with potential promotion to faculty positions.

Postdoctoral researchers will benefit from access to diverse high-throughput datasets and collaborations with leading investigators across UTHealth and the Texas Medical Center. The lab has a strong publication record and a stellar track record in postdoctoral training, with many alumni advancing to prestigious faculty positions and earning awards such as NIH K99, MIRA grants, and CPRIT Scholar faculty recruitment. Recent authored publications have appeared in Nature, Nature Medicine, Nature Neuroscience, Nature Communications, Genome Research, Genome Biology, Nature Machine Intelligence, and other high-impact journals.

About BSML and the Center for Precision Health (CPH)

BSML operates within the Center for Precision Health (CPH), a joint initiative of the School of Biomedical Informatics and the School of Public Health at UTHealth. The center focuses on advancing precision cancer medicine, pharmacogenomics, deep learning, and translational bioinformatics.

UTHealth is part of the world-renowned Texas Medical Center, located in Houston, Texas—the fourth-largest city in the United States and a vibrant, cosmopolitan hub. The School of Biomedical Informatics (SBMI) is the first of its kind and one of the largest biomedical informatics programs in the country.

Requirements

Qualified candidates should meet the following criteria:

Ph.D. in bioinformatics, computational biology, quantitative sciences, genetics, molecular biology, pharmacology, or a related field (required by the job start date).

Experience in analyzing high-throughput genomic data.

Proficiency in at least one programming language (e.g., Perl, Python, R, or C/C++).

A solid understanding of genetics or molecular biology is desirable but not mandatory.

Compensation

Salary and Benefits: Salary is commensurate with the NIH pay level and can be higher with strong research experience. Promotion to other positions (Research Scientist and Research Assistant Professor) is also available.
