Postdoctor In Natural Science, Specializing In Restoration/Conservation Biology

Göteborg University

The University of Gothenburg tackles society's challenges with diverse knowledge. 56 000 students and 6 600 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract researchers and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.

Postdoctor in natural science, specializing in restoration/conservation biology

At the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences (BioEnv) we have teaching and research activities that stretch from the alpine ecosystem, through forests, cultivated land and streams, all the way into the marine environment. In these environments we study different levels of biological organisation from genes, individuals and populations to communities and ecosystems. We work within ecology, evolution, physiology, systematics and combinations of these fields in order to understand the impact of natural and anthropogenic changes of the environment.

The department is placed at two different localities: in Natrium located on Medicinareberget in Gothenburg and Kristineberg Marine Research Station located in Fiskebäckskil. The current position is mainly placed at Natrium.

We offer

The University of Gothenburg is a state authority, which means special benefits, more holidays and a great pension. You can read more about our employment benefits here.

Subject area

Biology

Subject area description

This project will focus on the interaction between sea trout ( Salmon trutta ) and eelgrass ( Zostera marina ) in Swedish coastal environments, how the presence of eelgrass meadows affect young brown trout, and vice versa, how the brown trout as predator affect the eelgrass community. In the project you will collaborate both with salmonid and eelgrass experts. In particular you will study movement patterns of sea trout in their spawning stream from small coastal stream into coastal areas. The overall aim is to examine how movement patterns, habitat use and survival of brown trout is affected by the presence of eelgrass. We will also perform comparative study of eelgrass meadows with different levels of sea trout abundance in order to investigate the top-down effect on the mesopredators, invertebrate algal grazers and epiphytic algae. The study will be performed on the west coast of Sweden. There will be opportunities for the Postdoc to frame his research areas based on personal interest within this framework. The postoc will work in close collaboration with a network of scientist with the INTERREG project BlueBioClimate and especially linked to the research groups Salmonid Ecology Group at the department of Biology and Environmental sciences and Zorro; ZOstera RestoRatiOn at the department of Marine Science.

Duties

Employment as a postdoctor aims to give recent PhD graduates the opportunity to consolidate and develop their research skills. Techniques used within the project will involve telemetry (passive integrated transponder, stationary antennas and acoustic telemetry) as well as monitoring of Eelgrass using techniques such as cameras, underwater drones and tethering. The work duties will to a large extent be performed in the field. Specific research topics associated with the research project include habitat use, migration and behavioral ecology. It is also possible to join other ongoing projects within the larger INTERREG project, time allowing.

In addition to research, the postdoc can participate and engage in teaching activities at the department if desired (up to a maximum of 20% of full time).
