Description

An Immunology Postdoctoral Research Opportunity is available with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Agricultural Research Service (ARS) Avian Disease and Oncology Laboratory (ADOL) in East Lansing, Michigan. The selected applicant will conduct research on chicken innate immune responses to Marek's disease virus infection and molecular mechanism of vaccine protection.

The appointment is full-time for one year and may be renewed for up to four years upon recommendation of the ARS and availability of funding. The annual stipend rate for this position is $48,403. A stipend supplement in the amount of up to $5,160 is provided to offset the cost of an individual or family health insurance plan. The participant must show proof of health and medical insurance. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE. Relocation expenses up to the amount of $2,000 will be reimbursed, with prior approval. Funding of $2,000 is available to reimburse travel-related expenses to scientific and professional development activities, The participant does not become an employee of ARS or ORISE.

While participants will not enter into an employment relationship with ARS, this position requires a pre-employment check and a full background investigation.

Qualifications

Eligible applicants must have received a doctorate degree in immunology, infectious diseases, or related fields within five years of the desired starting date. A doctor of veterinary medicine (DVM) degree in addition to the previously mentioned degree is desirable but not required.

Preferred skills include:

  • Experience with animal models of infectious diseases
  • Experience with immunology research
  • Strong molecular biology skills, including PCR (conventional and real-time), gene cloning and expression, sequencing, cell culture, flow cytometry, site-directed mutagenesis and bioinformatics
  • Experience with experimental design and statistical analysis
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to operate independently
  • Demonstrated ability to publish in peer-reviewed journals
