Job Description
Job Purpose
To integrate the quantitative knowledge and sustainability performance of “Good Agricultural Practice (GAP)” and other better-management recommendations to understand how to provide more sustainable recommendations for choosing between cropping systems or for choosing particular practices within a cropping system. To lead the further validation and stakeholder adaptation of the Field Calculator in terms of technologies that reduce the environmental load of agrochemicals (nutrients, pesticides, GHG) to the environment, through own research and by linking with various partners in and outside of IRRI. This job will contribute to a number of projects at IRRI (e.g. Closing Rice Yield Gaps in Asia with Reduced Environmental Footprint (CORIGAP), Sustainable Rice Platform, Ecological Intensification, the Irrigated Rice Research Consortium, and new projects that will start up) and is expected to have test sites at various locations in Asia.
This position is based at IRRI Headquarters, Los Banos Laguna, Philippines.
Roles and Responsibilities
-Apply the Field Calculator to design and evaluate prototype rice cropping systems that are productive, profitable, resource-use efficient, and have minimal negative environmental impact. This may entail linking the Field -Calculator to optimization or trade-off models at field, farm, village, or landscape level
-Lead quantitative data collection and interpretation of on-farm practices in project regions aimed at reducing yield gaps, with sufficient data to calculate environmental sustainability indicators in addition to socio-economic ones
-Develop research activities to further elaborate relationships between crop management options and environmental impact indicators (e.g. reduction in agrochemical load or pesticide residues in water, soil, or air; enhancement of biological/ecosystem resilience indicators), depending on own skills and on identified needs
-Provide agronomic guidance to project partners to improve sustainability, along with profitability, as they use integrated better management recommendations
-Collaborate effectively with scientists, donors, and extension specialists
Publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals, and present findings at national and international conferences/workshops and other fora.
Qualifications
-Recent PhD in agricultural sciences (agronomy, soil science, environmental science)
-Broad overview of crop and natural resources management technologies
-Excellent team player and communicator; fluent in English
Skills Required
Experience using crop models or decision tools
