You will work as part of a multi-institutional team under the direction of Dr Andrew Henderson at Newcastle University. Your primary role will be to undertake biomarker and geochemical analysis of lake sediments recovered from a number of Crannog sites from across the Irish Sea, mainly between SE Scotland and NE Ireland. Specifically you will prepare and analyse sediments for faecal sterol concentrations, n-alkane distributions, biogenic silica content, and carbon isotopes of organic matter. Your main role will be to deliver these geochemical analyses, but you will also liaise with other postdocs and investigators working on complementary proxy datasets (sedimentology, palaeoecology, ancient DNA). You will be expected to analyse the data collected, contribute to project meetings, and be encouraged to produce publications.
You will have a PhD in organic geochemistry, geochemistry or a related aspect of Physical Geography/Earth Sciences/Environmental Science/Archaeology, knowledge of palaeolimnology and a keen interest in human impacts on the environment. You should have proven experience of biomarker extraction techniques and analysis of lipid compounds using GC-MS.
