Job Description

The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is one of the highest ranked scientific research organisations in the world. The Headquarters Laboratory is located in Heidelberg (Germany), with additional sites in Grenoble (France), Hamburg (Germany), Hinxton (UK) and Monterotondo (Italy).

The successful candidate will work in Wolfgang Huber’s group at EMBL (whuber@embl.de) and simultaneously be affiliated with Cellzome, a GSK company, located on the same EMBL campus in Heidelberg. Cellzome applies its world-class proteomics technology to the discovery of safe and efficacious drugs.

The researcher will develop statistical methods for cutting-edge quantitative proteomics experiments in drug research (normalization, quantification, differential abundance for simple and complex experimental designs). The development will be done in conjunction with application and testing of the methods on a large, existing and expanding data repository at Cellzome in close cooperation with researchers in biology and drug discovery working with different diseases. Resulting methodology will be published in scientific journals and distributed as open-source software (e.g. via Bioconductor).

Qualifications and Experience

The candidate will have PhD in a quantitative field (bioinformatics, physics, computer science) and a strong background in statistics and probability. Experience in working with large-scale data is desirable. She/he should have good verbal and written communication skills and a high motivation to interact with the researchers of different backgrounds and in several international locations. Basic understanding of mass spectrometry technologies and molecular biology, and the desire to apply theoretical concepts to practical problems are essential. Programming skills in a high-level language (e.g. R, Python, Matlab) are required, deeper experience in scientific computing will be an advantage.
