The Position:

CSIRO’s Mineral Resources Flagship is seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Post Doctoral Fellow to assist in the development of a research capability in the coke making and metallurgical coal / coke characterisation areas. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to identify the research directions most relevant to CSIRO’s strategic direction and implement a research program under the guidance of an experienced supervisor.

This is a fixed-term 3-year appointment; however consideration to further career development of strong and high-performing candidates will be given.

Specifically you will:
• Under the direction of senior research scientists, carry out innovative, impactful research of strategic importance to CSIRO that will, where possible, lead to novel and important scientific outcomes.
• Contribute to the science and experimental base of capability in the coke making and coal / coke characterization areas.
• Analyse existing data sets and develop experimental programs to support the fundamental understanding of coke-making and coal and coke characterization.
• Design, set and conduct high temperature experiments.
• Produce high quality scientific and/or engineering papers suitable for publication in quality journals, for client reports and granting of patents.
• Participate in CSIRO’s postdoctoral training program.

Location: Pullenvale, QLD
Salary: $78K - $88K per annum plus up to 15.4% superannuation

To be successful you will have:
• A doctorate (or will shortly satisfy the requirements of a PhD) in a relevant discipline area, such as metallurgy, materials, industrial chemistry or chemical engineering.
• Demonstrated ability to design high temperature experiments and apply innovative experimental and analytical solutions to scientific problems.
• Demonstrated ability in high-level interpretation of experimental data.
• Well developed interpersonal and communication skills, involving representation, negotiation and the ability to explain complex information, concepts and research results to industry and the scientific community both verbally and in written form.
• The ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary, regionally dispersed research team, plus the motivation and discipline to carry out autonomous research.
• A record of science innovation and creativity, plus the ability & willingness to incorporate novel ideas and approaches into scientific investigations.
