Information and Computational Sciences

An opportunity has arisen for a Bioinformatician to join a multidisciplinary research team at the James Hutton Institute as part of a RESAS/BBSRC funded project that will use state-of-the-art NB-LRR gene enrichment and current generation sequencing (RenSeq) technology to map and clone functional disease resistance genes in potato. The successful candidate will conduct all sequence analysis including assembly of PacBio and Illumina reads, SNP discovery and mapping. The post-holder will liaise closely with a Postdoctoral researcher, also employed on this project, for the validation of sequence polymorphisms and identification of resistance genes. The computational aspects of RenSeq will be further developed by the successful applicant in conjunction with the bioinformatics teams at the Sainsbury Laboratory and The Genome Analysis Centre (TGAC) in Norwich who are full partners in this project.

Applicants should have a Postgraduate degree or PhD in bioinformatics, relevant programming skills and experience in analysing current generation sequencing data. Candidates will be self-motivated and have excellent record-keeping skills. Good communication skills, an assertive nature and a high degree of forward planning ability are essential to the post. This post is based in Dundee, with some periods of up to 4 weeks in Norwich at TGAC. The post presents an excellent opportunity to join an enthusiastic team in an extremely interesting and state-of-the art area of science with established industrial links.
