Post-Doctoral Researcher/Senior Post-Doctoral Researcher : Cork, Ireland

Applications are invited for a post doctoral researcher position in the area of Environmental Metagenomics applied to biocatalysis based at University College Cork. The successful applicant will join a team of researchers based at the ERI http://www.ucc.ie/en/ERI/ and at the BIOMERIT Research Centre, Microbiology Department http://www.ucc.ie/biomerit who are focused on gaining a fuller understanding of how microbes survive, grow and interact with their various hosts and ecological niches at the molecular level; a process which is fundamental to their biotechnological exploitation. Marine ecosystems are the focus of this project as they are home to bacteria which are exposed to a wide variety of environmental conditions, such as extremes in temperature, salinity, nutrient availability and pressure. Survival under these conditions must have necessitated the adaptation and the development of unique cellular biochemistry and metabolism by these microbes. Thus, enzymes isolated from these microbes have the potential to possess quite unique physiological and biochemical properties.

The successful candidate will work under the joint supervision of Profesors O’Gara and Dobson and will develop improved heterologous expression systems and hosts for metagenomic library construction, together with high throughput screening systems. Deep sea marine sponges will specifically be targeted together with bacteria cultured from these sponges as sources for these biocatalysts. Metagenomic libraries will be constructed from metagenomic DNA isolated from these sponges and screened in different hosts and expression systems using robotic systems; to identify novel biocatalysts with utility in organocatalytic processes in the pharmaceutical industry. This will involve the development of functional screens which together with sequencing based approaches will be employed to isolate and identify these novel biocatalysts. Subsequent biochemical characterisation will be performed following purification of these heterologously expressed biocatalyst.
