You will work on characterising the strength of lower mantle rocks and processes which occur as rocks traverse the transition zone. Innovative experimentation on mantle analogue materials is a key factor and will demand scientific versatility. You will participate in this NERC-funded project, in collaboration with UCL, to develop effective experimental rock deformation techniques to test the rheological behavior of mantle analogue rocks. You will characterise fabrics, microstructures and chemistry of experimentally deformed samples to investigate deformation mechanisms that may be active at lower mantle conditions. You should have a PhD in a Geoscience discipline and experience of experimental rock deformation. Familiarity with rock rheology and micro-structural investigations is desirable. You will be part of a vigorous research group focusing on rock deformation mechanisms and their microstructural signatures. The post is available until 30 May 2016.
