King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) is a major new graduate university focused on becoming a leader in science and technology research and graduate education. Located near Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, the university’s coastline campus on the Red Sea features high-quality residences, extensive recreational facilities and beach, a multicultural environment, and a high quality of life for employees and their families.
The Saudi Aramco Marine Environmental Research Center at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) is seeking a marine ecologist/GIS scientist who can lead the development of a significant marine GIS and ecological mapping capability for the coastal seas of Saudi Arabia. The effort is part of a larger marine ecological and oceanographic effort to provide display, archiving, analysis, and visualization of marine and oceanographic data for the region. The individual will work with a team of marine ecologists and oceanographers as part of an integrated marine observing effort for the Red Sea. The effort includes initial baseline ecological assessments with long term monitoring to evaluate trends, sensitivities, and human influences. The ocean observing includes AUVs, moorings, coastal surface current mapping, remote sensing, and real-time 4D ocean modeling. Analysis is expected to include evaluation of differential anthropogenic effects on the ocean ecosystem, environmental sensitivity, interactions between coastal human efforts, coastal and deep-water ecosystems, and the effects climatic variations and global processes on the ecosystems of the Red Sea and Arabian Gulf. In addition to a significant marine science group at KAUST, the university resources include large supercomputing and visualization resources.
The candidate must have earned a PhD in geospatial research with experience in marine ecology, oceanography, remote sensing, and/or related marine topics. Experience with marine GIS systems, and the development of integrated observing resources incorporating GIS and archival systems is especially important.
Qualifications/Competencies
- PhD in geospatial research with marine, oceanography or related post-doc experiences;
- Proven publication record in the field of geospatial research with solid knowledge or marine ecology, oceanography or remote sensing;
- Documented experience of ecological assessments;
- Competency in the development of integrated observing systems;
- Fluent in English, both spoken and written;
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
- Ability to produce high quality deliverables on time and to work in a multi-tasking, multi-cultural environment;
- Good organizational skills and a strong ability to accomplish tasks independently.
- The successful candidate should be able to work with a large, cross-disciplinary team and lead the integration of marine GIS and ecological mapping capability on behalf of the Center and the larger effort at KAUST.
- A desirable qualification would be experience and/or interest in outreach and engagement beyond the Academy.
The position is for three years initially (renewable) and includes a competitive tax-free salary and other benefits (housing, health and life insurances, etc.).
