This role will seek to break new ground in understanding and exploiting the interplay between oil and starch biosynthesis in plant photosynthetic tissues, with a vision of creating a radically redesigned high biomass crop accumulating large amounts of oil in leaf tissues to meet burgeoning global demand for vegetable oil. The scientific discovery underpinning this approach is a paradigm shift in our understanding of the relationship between two molecules used to store energy from photosynthesis, namely oil (lipids) and starch.
