摘要:

The OpenNESS-Cana Project is seeking a post-doc to act in the science-policy interface.

Scholarly topics of interest include, but are not limited to socio-environmental policy and institutions in Brazil, Ecosystem Services (ESS), environmental change and land use conflicts, political and/or cultural change, economic development, globalization, or other major aspects of social ecological change and transition in the interior of São Paulo State.

The project is an attempt to objectively develop a legal/political/institutional mechanism of payment for ecosystem services (PES) in areas of high suitability for agriculture (especially sugarcane biofuel farms) in the State of Sao Paulo, Brazil. While on one hand the new Brazilian Forest Code bid innovatively predicts PES schemes, it also leaves an enormous gap regarding how these PES schemes would be implemented in practice in terms of identification, valuation and monitoring of ecosystem services. Therefore the project involves not only biophysical aspects of operationalizing ESS but has also a strong focus on socio-economic implications related to the political dimension of these schemes, through a dialogue with local stakeholders and decision makers.

We seek applicants with a demonstrated record of training, rigorous field research, and excellence in working in an interdisciplinary field (especially helping in training of undergraduate and graduate students within the newly created graduate school in Ecology and Biodiversity at UNESP). Fluency in English and Portuguese languages is necessary for this position.

Candidates also should demonstrate an interest in program building and the ability to work collaboratively across disciplinary boundaries with faculty and students in various departments and disciplines.

The appointment will be for 1 year initially with an option to renew the contract up to 2 additional years. The position is located at the Earth System Science Lab – LabTerra, Department of Ecology, at São Paulo State University – UNESP Campus at Rio Claro – SP, Brazil.

There will be strong collaboration with researchers at CCST / INPE (Brazil’s National Institute for Space Research), São José dos Campos – SP and the Helmholtz Centre for Environmmental Research – UFZ in Leipzig, Germany. This position requires a Ph.D. degree in Anthropology, Human Geography, History, Political Science, or Sociology or Environmental Sciences, Biology, Ecology and or any related field.
