Position Summary:

An NIH-funded Postdoctoral Research Associate position is available immediately in the Department of Pediatrics, Division of Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, for a self-motivated scientist to study the intestinal mucosal immune response involved in the devastating intestinal disease affecting premature infants called necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC). We utilize a neonatal mouse model of NEC, microfluidic gut-on-a-chip platform, and patient samples to study the intestinal mucosal immune response and understand the signaling pathways that are involved in the pro-inflammatory response seen in NEC. We also perform translational studies investigating the genetic and biological signature of infants with and without NEC, to identify novel diagnostic strategies enabling us to intervene earlier in the disease process. Highly motivated applicants should have excellent verbal and written communication skills. The postdoctoral fellow will benefit from both the outstanding environment in the lab and the highly collaborative UNC community. The candidate will be given opportunities to present his/her research work at national and international scientific meetings, work on translational and basic science research projects, and will be encouraged to apply to prestigious postdoctoral fellowships.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Ph.D. in a field related to position duties.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:

Position requires a Ph.D., M.D. or equivalent terminal or doctoral degree.

Demonstrated ability to implement laboratory procedures, conduct research and records findings. Analytical, reasoning and problem solving skills. Ability to analyze and interpret statistical data and to communicate data in a clear, concise manner. Computer literacy including the ability to use a variety of software packages to analyze data.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:

Possess abilities to perform requirements of the position.

Special Physical/Mental Requirements :

Works in laboratory environment with potential exposure to biological, chemical and radioactive hazards. Must be physically able to wear protective equipment. Must be able to provide standard care to research animals.
