Area of research:

Scientific / postdoctoral posts

Job description:

GFZ is Germany's national centre for solid Earth research. We advance the understanding of dynamic processes to address global challenges, from mitigating the impacts of natural hazards and sustaining our habitat amid global change to responsibly managing georesources. We are part of the Helmholtz Association, the largest German scientific organisation. With around 1,200 employees as well as ca. 500 guest researchers, we contribute to the Helmholtz Research Field Earth and Environment, aligning cutting-edge research with societal relevance and international collaboration. Our work integrates multidisciplinary studies across Earth's system components, leveraging advanced technologies and infrastructure to research solutions and to transfer our knowledge to society. We are doing this according to our vision: “Taking the pulse of our Earth to safeguard a habitable planet”.

For section 1.4 Remote Sensing and Geoinformatics (department "Geodesy"), we are looking for a:

Reference Number 10227

In the AgroHyd-X project, we are looking for a highly motivated scientist to contribute her/his expertise in recording precipitation amounts from X-band radar data to create an information product for farmers in the Brandenburg/Berlin region.

In a similar technical constellation to the German Weather Service (DWD) weather radars, two X-band systems in southern Brandenburg will enable a precipitation product with a higher spatial resolution of 100 m x 100 m. Based on this, a low-threshold precipitation information tool will be provided in a web application together with the Leibniz Institute for Agricultural Engineering and Bioeconomy (ATB), which can be used as a decision support for the timing and scope of management measures.

Your responsibilities:

Selection of location and commissioning of the X-band radars

Operational technical management and calibration/validation of the X-band radars in Brandenburg and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (TERENO monitoring network)

Further development of precipitation algorithms by adapting existing software (WraINfo) to the Brandenburg region and ensuring continuous data recording and processing at the radar sites

Quality analysis of the previous precipitation product using the TERENO monitoring network data of GFZ

Improvement of the precipitation product (Z-R relationship, further precipitation estimators, precipitation types, 2 radar locations)

Quality analysis of the improved precipitation product using data in the Brandenburg region

Analysis/testing of potentials and solutions for integrating the project's X-band precipitation information into DWD services

Publication of the results in peer-reviewed journals and presentation at conferences and user workshops

Your qualifications:

Master's degree (or equivalent) in atmospheric science, meteorology, (geo)physics, geoecology, geoinformatics with focus on natural sciences or related fields

ln-depth knowledge of precipitation detection with radar systems is most welcome

Excellent coding and quantitative analytical skills, preferably in Python and R

Creative & critical thinking and ability to publish

Excellent verbal and written communication skills and strong motivation

Ability to work both independently and in an integrated team environment

Fluent in English (written and spoken), German is beneficial but not required
