Postdoctoral Research Associate - General Medical Sciences - Global Health

Position Summary

The focus of the Postdoctoral Research Associate's work is to support research on high quality health systems with Dr. Margaret Kruk’s research group. A portion of the effort will be for self-directed research including publications, dissertation, and developing an independent research agenda.

The Quality Evidence for Health System Transformation (QuEST) Network is an initiative building from the work of the Lancet Global Health Commission on High Quality Health Systems. The QuEST Center at Washington University, directed by Prof. Margaret Kruk, will work with Research Centers in several countries and national governments and global partners to co-design and test future health system models and measures. These will include new survey tools for measuring system performance and testing of system improvement solutions. The QuEST Center at Washington University will work closely with research centers in Kenya, Ethiopia, India, South Africa, Switzerland, and in the United States, among other countries.

This project may involve travel to other countries and/or within the United States.

Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

Overview of Role:

Conduct analyses to measure and improve health system quality.

Perform independent analyses and research including developing research protocol.

Produce manuscripts and contribute to publications.

Contribute to QuEST Network research and translation initiatives.

Support the development and piloting of the PVS and E-cohort survey tools.

Support data analysis, translation and dissemination activities.

Take part in planning meetings and seminars to disseminate research.

Liaise with policymakers, providers, and other health system stakeholders.

Develop research collaborations with partners in the US and other countries.

Draft research agreements.

Support joint research projects.

Investigate additional QuEST Network funding streams.

Participate in writing grant proposals.

Participate in capacity building of team members and the QuEST Network.

Advise students, data analysts and research assistants on technical questions, manuscript writing and data analyses.

Provide support for the skill building activities of the QuEST Network though knowledge sharing activities, preparing online courses and in-person trainings, and facilitating discussions of research and evidence.

Working Conditions

This position works in a laboratory environment with potential exposure to biological and chemical hazards. The individual must be physically able to wear protective equipment and to provide standard care to research animals.

Salary Range

Base pay is commensurate with experience.

Required Qualifications

Applicants must have a PhD or equivalent in economics, epidemiology, public health, health policy and/or management, global health, health systems, public policy or a related field and a track record of research experience as well as publications. Candidates should also have the following: 1) strong quantitative skills; 2) strong writing, research, and analytical skills; 3) high-level interpersonal and organizational skills; and 4) demonstrated ability to work independently and manage research projects.

Preferred Qualifications

Familiarity with health systems in low- and middle-income countries is desirable and experience with data collection and data management is highly valued.
