An NIH-funded Postdoctoral Research Associate position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Douglas Thomas at the University of Illinois Chicago. This position is open immediately to investigate redox-based mechanisms of epigenetic regulation in diseases.

The Thomas Lab focuses on exploring novel mechanisms of epigenetic gene regulation through a combination of biochemistry, cell biology, and genomics approaches. Our research employs both in vitro and in vivo models, integrating advanced methodologies such as mass spectrometry, confocal microscopy, electron paramagnetic resonance imaging of free radicals, chemiluminescence, electrochemical analyses, genomic, and molecular biology techniques.

Notably, we have identified the free radical signaling molecule nitric oxide (NO) as an endogenous regulator of epigenetics, capable of influencing mRNA, histone, and DNA methylation. Current projects emphasize genome-wide analyses of epigenetic events contributing to the development and treatment of epigenetic-driven diseases. These projects build on our recent work, including studies on mRNA methylation (2023) and DNA methylation (2025.

We are seeking a self-motivated, career-oriented postdoctoral researcher to explore the function and dynamic regulation of mRNA and DNA methylation. The position offers a vibrant research environment and dedicated mentoring to support your scientific and professional growth.

Duties & Responsibilities

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Cell culture studies.

Cell free, kinetic and structural studies.

DNA/mRNA Sequencing

Mentoring graduate students.

Manuscript and grant writing / editing.

Record keeping of the experiments.

Presenting the results at scientific meetings.

Participate in weekly lab meetings, Journal Clubs and common seminars within the Department.

Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

PhD degree in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, or a related discipline.

Prior research lab experience.

Ability to independently design and analyze research projects, with excellent manuscript/grant writing and communication skills.

Protein and DNA/RNA handling experience.

Genome editing skills.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with bioinformatics, genome editing, and high-throughput sequencing is highly desirable but not required.

Experience with HPLC-MS, mass spectrometry and proteomics is advantageous.

For fullest consideration, applicants should apply and upload a CV/Resume, a cover letter describing your research background and interest, and the name and contact information of three professional references to: https://uic.csod.com/ux/ats/careersite/1/home/requisition/13959?c=uic by January 31, 2025.
