The Glass Lab at the University of Vermont, Larner College of Medicine, invites applications for postdoctoral fellowships starting immediately in chromatin biology, epigenetics, chromatin remodeling, gene transcription, and disease pathogenesis. We are investigating how chromatin reader domains recognize histone post-translational modifications, and how dynamic changes in the histone code alters this interaction. We use X-ray crystallography, nuclear magnetic resonance, and cryo-electron microscopy (Cryo-EM) techniques to investigate protein-protein and protein-ligand interactions. We are looking for an Ph.D. scientist with specific expertise in the area of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), X-ray crystallography, and/or cryo-electron microscopy (Cryo-EM). The successful applicant will conduct highly collaborative research in the lab of Dr. Karen Glass, who is an Associate Professor in the Pharmacology Department, and part of the EpiTeam: Epigenetic Targets, Exploration, and Modulation for Cancer Biology and Pathology in the new Firestone Medical Research Building. More details on current projects can be found on the Glass Lab website at the University of Vermont.
The postdoctoral research will be performed in a highly interdisciplinary and collaborative environment. UVM has focused training and professional development opportunities through the UVM Cancer Center, the Vermont Center for Immunobiology and Infectious Disease, and the Cardiovascular Research Institute. We are applying state of the art approaches to investigate how the chromatin state influences the activity of chromatin regulators. The Glass lab is particularly interested in recruiting postdoctoral associates who would like to further develop two new projects in the lab. 1. How recognition of epigenetic signals regulates parasite invasion in infectious diseases, and 2. Utilizing cutting edge methods in cryo-electron microscopy (Cryo-EM) to study the interactions of chromatin regulators with the nucleosome.
Learning Objectives:
The postdoctoral trainee will learn how to design and execute quantitative experiments in a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment, with the highest standard of ethical, responsible, and rigorous scientific research. The postdoctoral associate will continue their scientific training with the specific goal of attaining independence and building a portfolio of accomplishments and skills to help them establish an independent research program. The scientist in this position will be responsible for:
Carrying out an independent research project in the Glass lab to study molecular mechanisms underlying protein-protein interactions in Epigenetic signaling; Carrying out new research directions in the Glass lab (pilot projects that will be submitted for future funding); Writing and submitting fellowship/grant proposals to procure independent funding; Working collaboratively with and train/support Graduate, PhD, and Undergraduate students carrying out thesis research, independent study projects, rotations or doing summer research projects, as well as developing collaborations throughout the College and University as needed; Maintaining an accurate scientific notebook/records and documenting common laboratory protocols; Scientific literature searches; Presentation of results/data at conferences (poster/oral) and during weekly lab meetings; Writing up research results for publication in scientific journals. Creating scientific poster presentations, writing manuscripts and creating figures for publication; Travel and presentation of research findings at prestigious national/international conferences.
Eligibility Requirements:
Applicants should have a recent Ph.D. degree in molecular biology, microbiology, chemistry, biochemistry, structural biology, genetics/epigenetics or relevant fields. We are interested in candidates who are enthusiastic, willing to try new things, and have an interest in continued learning. Candidates are expected to have good communication skills (verbal and written), be able to function independently, mentor others in the lab, and develop protocols; acquire familiarity with the research paradigm; and prepare and submit publications and grant funding proposals.
Position Information:
UVM offers an excellent benefits package and a competitive salary (above the NIH NRSA levels) commensurate with qualifications and experience. Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled.
Applicants are required to submit a CV and cover letter to Dr. Karen Glass at Karen.Glass@uvm.edu
