Postdoc in Determining the Thermo-Fluid-Mechanical Effects of Non-Standard Laser Beam Profiles in Multi-Material Metal Additive Manufacturing via Numerical Dimulation

Applications are invited for a 2-year Post Doc position starting in Spring 2024 within the field of advanced numerical simulation of the impact of laser beam shaping in multi-material metal additive manufacturing processes. The position is part of the EU Horizon 2023 project titled “Enabling Laser Powder Bed Fusion for Large Scale Production of Multi-Material Components” – GlobalAM financed by EU carried out at the Department of Civil and Mechanical Engineering at Technical University of Denmark and coordinated by Robert Bosch, Germany.

The project considers the application of multiphysics and mechanical simulation of melt pool conditions during metal additive manufacturing of multi-material feedstocks using different beam shapes and profiles. This, among others, includes analyzing the impact of such beam profiles on the surface characteristics of printed powder layers with different powder sizes and arrangements in addition to the residual stress field.

The developed models will be validated against experiments designed by the consortium behind the project.

The candidate will be closely collaborating with another postdoctoral candidate who is responsible for developing part-scale and reduced order models of the process.

Responsibilities and qualifications

The objective is simulating the melt pool’s thermo-fluid-mechanical behavior under various processing conditions such as varying laser beam shapes and scanning patterns.

You will be responsible for the development of an advanced and calibrated multi-phase and multi-physics computational fluid dynamics model (CFD) plus a thermo-mechanical model with proper laser-material interaction modules to incorporate the non-standard beam profiles. Both two models will be in the deposition-scale.

Candidates should document experience within several of the fields: computational fluid mechanics, computational heat transfer, two-phase flow, flow in porous media as well as the finite volume method.

In addition to the direct project related research, you will conduct teaching related activities, disseminate your research through publication of papers in high-ranking journals and attending conferences and internationalize by a research stay abroad.

We envision that:

You have an open mind and can think creatively in a thermo-fluid-mechanical, computational, and programming context.

You are eager to elaborate on the newest research results, improve the ideas and test them by implementation.

You have experience within computational fluid dynamics as well as computational heat transfer from either developing your own codes and/or the use of commercial software packages such as OpenFOAM, ANSYS Fluent or Flow-3D.

As a formal qualification, you must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent).
