The Centre for Internationalisation and Parallel Language Use at the University of Copenhagen is offering a fully funded 2-year postdoctoral scholarship commencing 1 September 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter.
We are looking for a highly motivated candidate to undertake postdoctoral research as part of a 4-year collaborative project funded by Independent Research Fund Denmark and headed by Professor Slobodanka Dimova.
Background Current research suggests that the existing models of communicative competence (CC) fail to reflect the communicative practices in multilingual contexts. A multilingual understanding of CC is especially needed for applied linguistic research and professional work in linguistically diverse higher educational (HE) settings such as English-medium instruction (EMI) programs in geographical regions where English is not a dominant language. The question arises: How can we expand or refine the current communicative competence models to account for multilingual mediation in communication? Based on a cross-cultural comparative ethnography, this project seeks to expand the current conceptualizations of the communicative competence construct and theorize the enrichment of current theoretical frameworks.
The project “Towards a new model of communicative competence in multilingual higher education” addresses research questions related to 1) the communicative abilities that are needed to engage with tasks and activities, i.e., the language use domains, represented in the EMI classroom across the three university settings, i.e., University of Copenhagen (UCPH), University of Vienna (UV), and Chalmers University of Technology (Chalmers) ; 2) the aspects of communicative competence that assignments in the EMI courses across the three university contexts require; 3) perceptions and reflections on effective communication in EMI in introspective stimulated recall interviews with students and lecturers; and 4) the similarities and differences of the language use domains in the EMI classrooms across the three university contexts. Cross-contextual analyses of the EMI language use domain in three university cases (UCPH, UV, and Chalmers) will be applied to address the research questions. To sustain the richness and uniqueness of the cases, each case will be analyzed first independently and then comparatively by constructing meaningful linkages and relationships among cases.
