Postdoc position in Experimental Neutrino Physics

University of Amsterdam

Postdoc position in Experimental Neutrino Physics

Faculty/Services: Faculty of Science

Educational level: PhD

Function type: Academic Staff

Closing date: 15 September 2023

Vacancy number: 11832

Our group is looking for a postdoc who will join us in the KM3NeT experiment with the goal to make a world-leading measurement of atmospheric neutrino oscillations and work towards the unambiguous determination of the neutrino mass ordering. You will work with experimental and theoretical physicists in the context of the NWO programme "The Hidden Universe of Weakly Interacting Particles".

What are you going to do?

You are given the opportunity to take a leading role in the analysis of the data of the deployed detection units of KM3NeT/ORCA.

You will join the Nikhef neutrino physics group, with eight staff members, two postdocs, typically four PhD students as well as master- and bachelor students. The group works closely together, and has good connections with other groups at Nikhef. You will be closely involved in the daily supervision of one PhD student working on neutrino oscillations;

You will also join the KM3NeT experiment and in particular its neutrino oscillations group. You will regularly report in that group and coordinate closely with other members of the group;

You will be working with the data of deployed KM3NeT/ORCA detection units, where you will study aspects of data quality determination, detector calibration, event simulation and reconstruction, neutrino event candidate selection and classification;

You will, in a team, fit a model of atmospheric neutrino oscillations to the data, measure oscillation parameters, estimate systematic uncertainties, and work towards an unambiguous determination of the neutrino mass ordering;

You will have the opportunity to work in our lab where digital optical modules and detection units are constructed, integrated and tested;

If you desire, you will have the opportunity to contribute to teaching at the University of Amsterdam.

Tasks and responsibilities:

conducting research in experimental neutrino physics, resulting in academic publications in peer-reviewed international journals;

representing the KM3NeT experiment and our group at workshops, conferences, research schools, etc.;

contributing to outreach activities;

supervising Bachelor- and Master students and co-supervising PhD students;

supporting the group in pursuing external funding for research.

Your experience and profile:

PhD in particle- or astroparticle physics;

Committed researcher, demonstrated by publications in international refereed academic journals and conference contributions;

Interest in neutrino physics;

Familiar with professional computing in (astro)particle physics;

Professional command of English.

Our offer

We offer a temporary employment contract for 38 hours per week for an initial period of 1 year. Based on performance the contract can be extended to a total of two years, or longer if funding is available. The preferred starting date is fall 2023 and no later than January 2024.

The gross monthly salary, based on 38 hours per week and dependent on relevant experience, ranges between € 2,960 to € 4,670 (scale 10). This does not include 8% holiday allowance and 8,3% year-end allowance. The UFO profile researcher is applicable. A favourable tax agreement, the ‘30% ruling', may apply to non-Dutch applicants. The Collective Labour Agreement of Universities of the Netherlands is applicable.

The position is located in Amsterdam, within the experimental neutrino physics group based at the Nikhef institute.

Besides the salary and a vibrant and challenging environment at Amsterdam Science Park and at Nikhef we offer you multiple fringe benefits:

232 holiday hours per year (based on fulltime) and extra holidays between Christmas and 1 January;

multiple courses to follow from our Teaching and Learning Centre;

multiple courses on topics such as leadership for academic staff;

multiple courses on topics such as time management, handling stress and an online learning platform with 100+ different courses;

7 weeks birth leave (partner leave) with 100% salary;

partly paid parental leave;

a pension at ABP for which UvA pays two third part of the contribution;

the possibility to follow courses to learn Dutch;

help with housing for a studio or small apartment when you're moving from abroad.
