Postdoc In Membrane Filtration For Biorefinery Processes

Aalborg University

Description

Postdoc in Membrane Filtration for Biorefinery Processes (2021-224-03319)

At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Department of Chemistry and Bioscience, a position as Postdoc in biorefinery processes and membrane filtration is available at Center for Membrane Technology and Section of Sustainable Biotechnology. The position is available from 15.04.2021 or soon thereafter. The Department of Chemistry and Bioscience consists of five sections of which three are situated in Aalborg with research and teaching in Biotechnology, Applied Chemistry and Biology & Environmental Science, one in Copenhagen on Sustainable Biotechnology and one in Esbjerg on Chemical Engineering. The position is located within the section of Chemistry with working place in Aalborg.

Job description

The position is a part of two research projects. The first project is the Grass4Food project, with the overall goal to develop methods to purify proteins and other valuable compounds from grass juice with high yield.

Grass and other plants contain large amounts of proteins and other valuable ingredients that potentially can be used for human consumption. Proteins from grass can thereby substitute animal-based proteins, e.g., from milk or meat. Other molecules can be used as ingredients in human food products and there are large amounts of nutrients in the grass juice. Currently, the yield of proteins is low due to degradation during the purification process and insufficient extraction from the leaves.

The Postdoc should work with different separation technologies such as coagulation, filtration, microfiltration, ultrafiltration and other membrane separation methods. Analytical techniques will be used to monitor the concentration and quality of the proteins and other selected molecules during the different steps of the purification process. Novel methods have to be developed to ensure a high yield of proteins and ingredients.

The second project is the EcoPool project, where the aim is to develop new technologies for treatment of swimming pool water. The Postdoc should investigate flocculation and filtration methods to remove colloidal particles from swimming pool water.

The successful applicant must hold a PhD degree in Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology or equivalent educations. The candidate should document solid practical experience with set-up and operation of membrane filtration in lab and in pilot scale. Further, an ideal candidate has insight into colloical chemistry, protein chemistry and relevant analysis techniques. It will be an advantage if the candidate has experience with supervision and teaching. As the position is part of a research project with different industrial partners, the partner should also show good interpersonal and communication skills and team spirit to solve the problems in together with the different stakeholders.
