Time to Learn a New Skill

  The past few weeks have felt like a haze, an overwhelming amount of news could cloud our minds and make it difficult to concentrate on even the easiest tasks. Many scholars working abroad as post-docs, visiting scholars, and/or visiting students had to make tough decisions regarding their plans.

Transitioning to Remote Work

  As many laboratories and universities shut down temporarily, and we descended into a new regime of social distancing, we are challenged as to how to manage our work and our productivity. Despite everything that’s happening, graduate students and scholars are still expected to make headway on research and continue teaching. Some majors allow scholars to work remotely from home easily, however other majors are more challenging to adapt to the new reality. For example, some chemists who work in laboratories making molecules –– not Word docs –– for a living, would find it hard to be productive from home. We have to do our best to adapt to our new work environment and focus on what is possible  to achieve at the moment. Meanwhile, we can always discuss recent papers or ideas for new research projects by chatting regularly with advisers, research colleagues, and lab mates over platforms such as: Zoom, Skype, Whatsapp, WeChat, etc.

  You could be a visiting scholar/student, or a post-doc abroad, but you are stuck at home with no data to analyze. It may feel like your career have been put on pause, but do not despair, focus on learning new skills! There are tons of online tools and data to ‘play’ with, during the social-distancing period. It is a privilege of a handful of labs to keep up with the latest trends, so look up what are the latest developments in your area of expertise, and try to improve or learn a new skill. You could also try to catch up with some reading on current literature in your field.

  ·         Programming: it could be a great skill to learn, as it is important in our daily life to enhance and increase the power of computers and the internet.

  ·         MatLab: it is easy to learn, it is great for creating visualizations, and it is a fast alternative for developing your own algorithms; also, MatLab has built-in equation solvers. Plus, many researchers, scientists and engineers who are already using MATLAB find it easy to move to deep learning because of the functionality of the Deep Learning Toolbox.
