Post-Doctoral Position in Empirical Digital Ethics

We are offering an interdisciplinary postdoctoral position in Empirical Digital Ethics. The postdoctoral researcher will contribute to two research projects focusing on control, trust and responsibility in the context of AI- driven autonomous systems. The position is advertised by the Digital Ethics Lab of the Digital Society Initiative, University of Zurich (UZH). Funding is provided for three years (extension possible) by the Swiss National Science Foundation within the National Research Program 77 "Digital Transformation".
Your responsibilities
The research projects involve cutting-edge topics in digital ethics including fairness-by-design for AI and meaningful human control of autonomous systems in sensitive contexts such as employment and security. The postdoctoral researcher is expected to coordinate the empirical aspects of the research projects, such as experimental design, data analysis and technology design in collaboration with philosophers, experts in international humanitarian law, social scientists as well as computer and data scientists. The team involves researchers from UZH, the Zurich University of Applied Sciences, the University of St. Gallen and the École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne. You will be given leeway for developing own research goals within the framework of the research projects.
The projects are expected to have considerable practical implications, and are conducted in close collaboration with partners from the industry, government and NGOs. The postdoctoral researcher will be involved in the operational lead of PhD students with a computer science background who are working in software design and virtual experimental environments and a PhD student in law. Interest and ability in working in such an environment is mandatory.
Your profile
PhD in psychology, experimental ethics, HRI or a related field
Experience in experimental research methods; in particular conception and implementation of (virtual) experiments.
Good command of statistical data analysis
A few publications in top-tier international journals
Team spirit, commitment and pleasure in working with PostDocs and PhD students in the fields of computer science, philosophy, humanitarian law and management
Strong interest in the social aspects of predictive modeling and autonomous systems, in particular fairness, non-discrimination and human rights
Very good command of English, written and spoken
Fluency in German would be an assetWhat we offer
