The Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics, University of Cambridge invites applications for a post-doctoral position in general relativity (http://www.damtp.cam.ac.uk/user/gr/about/) to start in fall 2016. This position is for 1 year at Cambridge, funded by an STFC Grant and will continue for 2 further years (extendable to 3 years) at the Instituto Superior Tecnico in Lisbon funded by an ERC grant.

Duties include developing and conducting individual and collaborative research objectives, proposals and projects. The role holder is expected to plan and manage their own research and administration, with guidance if required, and assisting in the preparation of proposals and applications to external bodies. You must be able to communicate material of a technical nature and be able to network.

Primarily the post holder will be researching the modelling of compact objects as sources of gravitational waves in general relativity and modified theories of gravity including interactions with fundamental fields. Candidates should have a good track record in one or more of the following areas: gravitational wave source modelling and astrophysics, numerical relativity, computational fluid dynamics, alternative theories of gravity, stellar collapse and black holes.

Further particulars: The position includes funding of about 3000 EUR annually for travel at both Cambridge and Lisbon. The candidate would furthermore participate in an H2020-MSCA-RISE network involving 8 institutions in Europe, the US, Canada and Japan. This network includes the Perimeter Institute with whom bilateral agreements support further exchange visits. Special funding for exchange visits between Lisbon and Cambridge will be available for the candidate throughout the 3 to 4 year period.

The appointment will be made during the first year at Cambridge at level with salary from £28,695 depending on age and experience and subsequently at Lisbon with a salary of 2100 Euro/month tax free.
