Job Description

The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is one of the highest ranked scientific research organisations in the world. The Headquarters Laboratory is located in Heidelberg (Germany), with additional sites in Grenoble (France), Hamburg (Germany), Hinxton (UK) and Monterotondo (Italy).   We are seeking a Bioinformatician to work in the context of the newly-established BMBF-funded German National Bioinformatics Infrastructure Network (de.NBI), of which the Heidelberg Human Bioinformatics (HD-HuB) node is committed to development and deployment of human-centered bioinformatics tools and services. The position entails developing and maintaining bioinformatics tools for analyses of metagenomics and human 'omics data. Responsibilities range from devising new analytical methods to robust software implementation and integration into software pipelines and service portals. These activities will take place in a highly collaborative research environment requiring interactions with scientists, who perform cutting-edge research on the human microbiome, in cancer genomics, statistical computing and multi-omics data integration. The postholder will additionally work closely with computational support initiatives at EMBL.

Qualifications and Experience

Requirements for this position include: a PhD degree, preferably in a technical field with some exposure to biological research. Good programming skills (knowledge of R and/or Python are most valuable) and familiarity with Unix / Bash are essential. The ideal candidate will additionally have experience with some of the following: developing and maintaining bioinformatics tools, deploying software, e.g. as a web service, Galaxy pipeline or virtual machine, knowledge of HTML and web development. Expertise in analyzing microbiome or other high-throughput genomic data is a plus. Good communication and organisational skills including excellent written and spoken English (German language proficiency not essential), a desire and ability to work well within a team, and the willingness to learn will complete your profile.
