Post-Doctoral Position Available at Penn State University in Bacterial Persistence

Job Description

A post-doctoral position is available immediately for microbiologists, molecular biologists, biochemical engineers, and geneticists interested in discerning the genetic basis of bacterial persistence (i.e., tolerance to antibiotics without genetic change) as mediated via toxin/antitoxin systems. A Ph.D. in microbiology, molecular microbiology, biochemistry, biochemical engineering, or a related field with a strong background in molecular biology is required as well as a strong desire to learn about bacterial physiology. Applicants should have a successful peer-reviewed publication history (at least two published manuscripts as a first author) and be in a position to begin within the next three months. We recently discovered the first broad-spectrum compound that is effective in killing persister cells (mitomycin C, Environ. Microbiol. 2015, on-line) and have been a leader in determining the physiological role of toxin/antitoxin systems. Our recent publications include those in Nature Chemical Biology, Nature Communications, PLoS Pathogens, PNAS, Nature ISMEJ, Microb. Biotechnol., J. Molecular Biology, Infect. Immun., Molecular Systems Biology, Environ. Microbiol., J. Bacteriol., BMC Microbiology, and Appl. Environ. Microbiol. Dr. Wood has 230 publications to date (yielding an H index of 60) and has placed 18 researchers in academe.
