Department Description
The Materials Chemistry Department is a group of Chemists, Material Scientists, and Chemical Engineers who actively supports the nation's nuclear weapons stockpile by providing materials expertise to SNL's non-nuclear components. We use our understanding of chemical properties to design, evaluate and exploit monomers, polymers and functional materials. Our core competencies span foams, composites, adhesives, plastics, surface finishing and electrochemical deposition. We have the facilities for materials characterization, design prototyping and WR processing.

Job Description
Postdoctoral Appointee
Job Summary
The Post-Doctoral Appointee Program is designed to recruit outstanding Ph.D. applicants to assist a line organization in meeting its mission objectives and to provide a professional technical work environment for the employee. The Ph.D. must have been conferred within one to five years prior to employment. These assignments are for a one-year period, with the option at management's discretion to serve no more than five additional one-year assignments. Extensions of up to six years require employee's manager approval.
Primary Job Duties
The Materials Chemistry Department at Sandia National Laboratories in Livermore, CA is seeking a postdoctoral researcher to conduct experimental research in selected areas related to electrochemical characterization methods and thermal energy to electric conversion. Programs of interest are thermal physical and electrical properties characterization of thermoelectric materials and development of electrochemical methods for high temperature/high pressure systems. The candidate is expected to design experimental strategies, implement the physical apparatus and instruments to conduct experiments, acquire, interpret and publish experimental results. We are looking for a postdoc to create new understandings and capabilities to characterize chemical, thermal and electrical properties of materials to predict aging, interactions and compatibility issues. Probes behavioral phenomena associated with material characteristics by using the scientific method's hypothesis, test, and evaluation techniques; critical review; or similar engineering research and development methods. Initiates, designs, develops, executes, and evaluates new processes, products, or systems through basic and applied research.
The researcher must be able to communicate effectively with engineers, chemists and computational scientists to support collaborative programs and to give direction to experimental materials development and evaluation. Plans, conceives, conducts, or manages research and development for Sandia's customers and sponsors. Advanced technical degree or significant equivalent experience. Technical knowledge and competencies appropriate to the position. Thorough knowledge of and experience with designing, planning, and executing research, design, and development projects. Demonstrated ability to team across disciplines. Publication and participation in National Scientific Societies is strongly encouraged.
Required
(1)Ph.D. in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Analytical Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, or relevant field.
(2) Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. DOE Q security clearance.
Desired
(1) Leadership and critical thinking skills should be specifically addressed in a research summary that should be submitted as part of the resume in the on-line application.
(2) Publication record in peer reviewed journals. Proven ability to mentor students and lead research efforts.
(3) Demonstrated commitment to constantly improving ES&H and security as well as an understanding of activity-level work (hazardous work) and laboratory operations is desired.
(4) Knowledge and experience with electrochemical measurements, thermodynamics, and high temperature/high pressure systems.
(5) Experimental experience with thermal and electrical conductivity measurements.
(6) Experimental experience with characterization techniques including x-ray diffraction, x-ray fluorescence, and electron microscopy.
(7) Teamwork and good Communication. Development/delivery of presentations to technical and non-technical audiences.
(8) Accurate scientific documentation skills are essential.
(9) Strong desire to solve applied materials problems.
