Postdoctoral studies in cancer/Immunology/molecular
biology (scholarship)
Karolinska Institutet, Department of Medicine, Solna, Rheumatology research unit
Division
The Rheumatology Unit, Solna, is an active and internationally successful research unit. Here clinical, experimental and epidemiological research is conducted in close collaboration with the rheumatology clinic at the Karolinska University Hospital, Solna. The unit has a leading role in several national and international consortia and networks. Work will be conducted in the research group of Dr. Fredrik Wermeling that has a focus on finding new treatment strategies for cancer and autoimmune diseases.
Duties
The focus of the postdoctoral position relates to anti-inflammatory properties of the STAT6 signaling pathway, with an emphasis on myeloid cells in a cancer setting (See Wermeling et al, 2013, PNAS; and Anthony, Kobayashi, Wermeling et al 2011, Nature). A major focus also relates to antibody mediated effector functions (e.g. related to treatments with tumor specific antibodies). Animal models for autoimmune and inflammatory disease as well as cancer, and human patient material
are extensively used in the research group. Methods such as flow cytometry and sorting, signaling and gene expression analysis, cell culture and molecular biology techniques including CRISPR/Cas9 are central to the work in the group.
Entry requirements
We seek a highly motivated candidate with a demonstrated record of scientific excellence.
The successful applicant has an extensive experience with molecular biology as well as with working with animal models for cancer.
Experience generating and studying cancer cell lines (both in vivo and in vitro) with modified gene expression (e.g. lacking or over expressing certain genes) is central to the
project. Experience with CRISPR/Cas9 is highly valued.
Experience working with myeloid cells, including neutrophils, monocytes, and macrophages, but also cancer related anti-inflammatory myeloid cells; e.g. tumor associated macrophages (TAMs) and Myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSC) is highly valued. Experience working with antibody mediated effector functions (e.g. related to Fc gamma receptors) is valued.
Experience with global gene expression analysis (e.g. by RNAseq), bioinformatic analysis and with studying intracellular signaling pathways is highly valued. Isolating and analyzing DNA, RNA and proteins using various techniques; e.g. by PCR, qPCR, multi-color flow cytometry, western blot etc are central techniques in the project.
We welcome a creative, hardworking and enthusiastic team-player to our group. The candidate is expected to partake in experimental design, experimentation, presentations, and preparation of publications. Personal suitability and scientific expertise is highly valued. The applicant must hold a PhD in Molecular Biology/Biomedical Sciences or equivalent and be proficient in English, both spoken and written.
Note that we aim to fill this position as soon as possible.
Scholarships to pursue postdoctoral studies may be awarded to individuals who come from other countries with the intention of remaining in Sweden only while obtaining all or part of their education. The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish PhD or higher. Having received a salary or other remuneration from Karolinska Institutet during the past two years may be disqualifying.
One requirement for receiving a scholarship for postdoctoral studies is central registration as a postdoc.
Type of scholarship
Karolinska Institutet awards scholarships to pursue postdoctoral studies. This educational scholarship, which is paid for a maximum of two years within four years after the receipt of a PhD or the equivalent, is tax-exempt. The amount is set for twelve months at a time and is paid out on a monthly basis. In exceptional cases, shorter periods may be acceptable.
Application process
An application must contain the following documents in English:
1. A cover letter stating shortly the research experience and background of the applicant
2. A complete curriculum vitae, including date and title of thesis defense, previous and current
position and academic distinctions etc.
3. A complete list of publications that clearly separates published papers from manuscripts
4. Verifications for crediting of illness, military service, work for labour unions or student
organisations, parental leave or similar circumstances
5. Verification from the thesis defence committee or the equivalent (only if the thesis defence is scheduled within three months after the application deadline)
The application is to be submitted on the MyNetwork recruitment system.
Type of employment: Postdoctoral studies.

The Department of Medicine, Solna, is one of the largest departments at Karolinska Institutet. The department consists of several units that are separated into different research groups. The core activities of the department are research, doctoral education and undergraduate education for medical and biomedical students. The research has three main profiles: allergy, cardiovascular medicine and inflammatory diseases.
Karolinska Institutet is one of the world´s leading medical universities. Its mission is to contribute to the improvement of human health through research and education. Karolinska Institutet accounts for over 40 per cent of the medical academic research conducted in Sweden and offers the country´s broadest range of education in medicine and health sciences. Since 1901 the Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet has selected the Nobel laureates in Physiology or Medicine.
Pursuant to the regulations of the Swedish National Archives, applications are kept on file for two years after the appointment has gained legal force. The regulations do not apply to attachments that have been printed or otherwise published.
Karolinska Institutet strives to provide a workplace that has approximately the same number of women and men, is free of discrimination and offers equal opportunity to everyone.
