Are you our next Consulting Agronomist, Agricultural Sustainability?
We are seeking a part-time consulting agronomy professional who has technical expertise on the intersection of crop nutrition and environmental issues to advise and collaborate with the Public Affairs and Commercial teams. This position reports to Mosaic’s Corporate Responsibility Manager and evaluates technical cooperation projects designed to measure and improve agriculture’s environmental footprint; monitors and provides counsel on new and emerging agricultural sustainability issues that could impact Mosaic’s business, including 4R nutrient stewardship, conservation agriculture practices, nutrient and water use efficiency to prevent the inefficient use of applied fertilizers, and impacts of climate change on agricultural soil and water management; advises on conservation agriculture policies and programs, including agricultural regulatory and incentives programs; participates in the design and evaluation of laboratory and field-based activities to reduce loss of agricultural phosphate to waterways. The Consulting Agronomist will coordinate with Mosaic’s agronomy group as appropriate.

What will you do?
•Provide technical expertise on nutrient application, nutrient use efficiency and mitigation of environmental impacts from nutrients in agriculture, specifically the phosphorous cycle, soil health, and attributes, use of and differences between commercial fertilizer and manure in agriculture
•Analyze nutrient best management practices, conservation agriculture outcomes and other nutrient efficiency data that can be built into algorithms, data sets and computer models, with the goal of determining opportunities for the continuous improvement of agricultural yield and environmental performance
•Review existing indices, materials and research on sustainable agriculture, conservation agriculture policies and practices, and various government programs; provide analysis and recommendations
•Provide input on various national and state comment periods
•Recommend field-based research to be conducted and coordinate with research partnerships on nutrient stewardship practices that measure how to reduce the “nutrient footprint” of agriculture; coordinate with Commercial team as needed
•Analyze industry fertilizer product development to align with measurement and reporting on sustainable agriculture
•Evaluate and advise on conservation agriculture policies, practices and programs
•Assist Public Affairs team with converting scientific research and knowledge into developed advocacy positions and stories on sustainable agriculture, nutrient stewardship and balanced crop nutrition
•Work on various other related issues and provide training to Mosaic staff, as requested
•Work will average 30 hours per week, with 30+% travel primarily in North America

What do you need for this role?
•Master’s or Ph.D. in in agronomy, environmental science, agricultural engineering, agricultural economics, crop/soil science, agricultural sustainability or related field
•Minimum of 5+ years of agronomy experience for candidates with a Master’s Degree or 2 years of experience is required with a Ph.D.
•Knowledge of crop nutrition, soil science and conservation programs
•Extensive knowledge of crop nutrients and their potential environmental impact, particularly phosphorus
•Certified Crop Advisor preferred
•Demonstrated problem solving, critical thinking and analytical skills, including ability to assess agricultural computer models and indices for efficacy
•Ability to interpret and understand statistics in evaluating small plot and on farm research trials data preferred
•Ability to synthesize research data from various sources, delivering key insights and recommendations preferred
•Ability to effectively translate data into market related information preferred
•Adept at meeting established deadlines – a strong sense of urgency
•Strong verbal and listening communication skills, including excellent presentation skills
•Demonstrated leadership, consensus-building and relationship-building skills
•Ability to create effective partnerships at all levels of the organization and with external stakeholders
•Strong attention to detail
•Ability to travel 30+% in North America depending on needs
