Tenure track position as Assistant professor in Computing Science with focus on Database Systems

Umeå University is the largest university in north Sweden with more than 32 400 students. The Department of Computing Science (http://www.cs.umu.se/english/) is a dynamic department with more than 85 employees from about 10 different countries. We offer a broad selection of courses on bachelor, master and doctoral level. We also conduct research on a broad range of topics in the area of Computing Science. Strong research of relevance for this position is e.g. conducted in distributed systems, including resource management systems for cloud environments.
Background
Umeå University is investing in research and development of expertise in the area of database systems as part of creating an infrastructure for federated research databases. As part of this effort Umeå university will finance an assistant professor, a postdoc (2 years) and a Ph D student (4 years) which will be form an emerging research group. The Assistant professor will lead the recruitment for these positions.
Work description
The successful applicant will be a key person in the build-up of the technical competence necessary for the planned effort in federated databases. The work areas are essentially two: to build and develop research that is central to investment made by Umeå University in federated databases, including related security solutions, and to actively participate in the design and selection of technology for the federated database solutions of Umeå university.
The research that is initiated is expected to include development of both theory and methodologies that are highly relevant for a federated database infrastructure, with research regarding integrity and security in database systems as the most important example. It is crucial that the research is of central importance for the university investment in federated database systems, including the important area of integrity solutions.
The position also involves taking part in education both at basic and advanced level. This includes supervision of Ph D students and postdocs in the subject area, lecturing in basic courses, and supervision of Master Thesis.
The position is permanent and fulltime (100%). During the first four years the focus will be on the holder’s own research, however supervision, lecturing and improving your pedagogical qualifications will be included up to 20% of fulltime. The position is part of Umeå University’s tenure track system, which means that an Associate Senior Lecturer has the right to apply for promotion to a tenure position as Senior lecturer / Associate professor. This must be done within four years.
The holder of the position will get resources from the university to finance a postdoc (2 years) and a Ph D student (4 years) in order to strengthen the research environment. In addition he/she is expected to actively seek external funding to further develop and strengthen the research.
Qualifications
Eligible candidates will have a doctoral degree in Computing Science / Computer Science (or equivalent scientific competence). In addition relevant and documented scientific and pedagogical skills in the area of the employment is required. An applicant who has completed his/her doctoral degree no more than seven years prior to the deadline for application will primarily be considered.
