Postdoctoral Research Associate
We are seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Research Associate to work under the supervision of Dr Christopher Ridgers in the York Plasma Institute, part of the Physics Department at the University of York. You will be involved in a collaborative research project between the University of York, Imperial College London and the University of Warwick. The aim of the project is to develop a world-leading simulation code for high energy density plasmas. It is envisaged that this code will make an essential contribution to maintaining the UK’s position at the forefront of this field as large-scale facilities such as the National Ignition Facility push towards nuclear fusion ‘ignition’ and new laser systems such as those comprising the Extreme Light Infrastructure push high energy density plasmas into new regimes.
The post holder will work to develop the ODIN arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian radiation hydrodynamics code to: (i) improve the thermal conduction model to include non-local effects, (ii) improve the description of the generation and evolution of magnetic fields in the plasma and (iii) include the effect of energetic electrons generated in high-intensity laser-plasma interactions. The post-holder is expected to build a leading role in the project, starting to establish international reputations for his/her work which will be promoted through presentations at international conferences and journal publications. S/he is expected to collaborate closely with the other project team members in order to maximise the impact of the research programme.
Informal inquiries may be made to Dr Chris Ridgers (christopher.ridgers@york.ac.uk).
The post is available full-time, on a fixed-term basis for up to three years.
Salary will be within the range £30,434 - £37,394 a year.
Closing date: 4 January 2014
