ELECTRON MICROSCOPY STUDY OF 9Cr STEEL OXIDATION
The University is seeking to appoint a Research Associate to work with Dr. Yu Lung Chiu and Prof. Hugh Evans on advanced characterisation of the oxidation of 9Cr1Mo steel used in Advanced Gas cooled nuclear Reactors (AGRs). These steels can undergo a transition from protective to rapid breakaway oxidation during high-temperature exposure and the aim of the project is to understand the underlying causes of this transition and, if possible, predict its occurrence. The School of Metallurgy and Materials has a range of advanced electron microscopes including a recently commissioned TALOS F200 scanning transmission electron microscope, the first operational machine of its type in the UK. This project will involve extensive use of focussed ion beam microscopy and high-resolution chemical analysis of alloy samples using electron microscopes. The project is funded by EDF-Energy and close collaboration with the company will be expected.
Candidates must have a PhD (or are awaiting examination) in a relevant subject and demonstrate experience in transmission electron microscopy and/or high-temperature oxidation.
Informal enquiries can be made to Yu Lung Chiu (Y.Chiu@bham.ac.uk) or Hugh Evans (h.e.evans@bham.ac.uk).
