Postdoctoral Research Fellow : Edmonton, Canada

A postdoctoral research position is available to conduct research on the ozonation and advanced oxidation of oil sands process-affected water. The successful candidate must be able to operate and maintain a UPLC and a time-of-flight mass spectrometer. Experience with ion-mobility is desirable, as well as with other analytical instruments such as FT-IR, ion chromatography and toxicological tools to study the effectiveness of advanced oxidation and physical treatment for remediation of oil sands process-affected water. This position is part of a five year NSERC- Industrial Research Chair Program in Oil Sands Process-Affected Water Treatment. Applicants should hold Ph.D. degree in analytical chemistry, environmental chemistry, chemical Engineering or Environmental Engineering and also have a record of publishing in peer-reviewed journals. The successful candidate will work collaboratively in different projects at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.

The successful applicant will be also expected to assist in the training and mentoring of graduate students, writing research proposals, and teaching experience can be arranged if desired. A competitive stipend will be awarded commensurate with experience.

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (at the University of Alberta) offer a unique training environment with state of the art infrastructure in both analytical instruments and facilities for advanced oxidation processes. We are honoured to be one of the largest and best- equipped programs in Canada. The University of Alberta is Canada's fourth largest university and is located centrally in Edmonton on the South bank of the North Saskatchewan River. The University was declared the best non-US institution in the world for postdoctoral studies in 2004 by ‘The Scientist’ magazine. Edmonton is the capital city of Alberta and it has more green space than any other major city in North America. The river valley is truly a major asset to the city and the river valley parks (over 28 square miles, or 20 times the size of New York's Central Park) are well utilized in both summer and winter. Edmonton has a population of 880,000 with a cosmopolitan culture and artistic atmosphere. It is also a sports minded city with professional hockey, football, baseball and soccer teams. The university has its own major sports teams. The town of Jasper is about 3.5 hours and Banff is about 4 hours by car from Edmonton. The drive to Jasper is beautiful but is sufficiently far to maintain it in an uncrowded state and thus a paradise for naturalists and back country hikers and skiers.
