Job Description

Position Summary: Postdoctoral Scientist in Tropical Pacific Climate Simulation and PredictionThe Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences Program at Princeton University, in association with NOAA's Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory (GFDL), seeks a postdoctoral or more senior scientist for research related to tropical Pacific climate simulation and prediction. The scientist will work to advance mechanistic understanding of the tropical Pacific climatology, and its impacts on climate variability including the El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO). A key focus will be understanding the causes of tropical Pacific climatological biases in model simulations and initialized predictions, and developing new methods to improve the simulations and seasonal forecasts produced by existing models and forecast systems. The scientist will make extensive use of a variety of observations and modeling tools, including newly developed high-resolution global climate models and a state-of-the-art coupled data assimilation system.Initial appointment is for one year, with possibility of renewal subject to satisfactory performance and continued funding. Complete applications, including a CV, publication list, and contact information for at least 3 references in order to solicit letters of recommendation, and a one to two page statement of research interests should be submitted by September 1, 2014 for full consideration. For additional information, contact Andrew Wittenberg (Andrew.Wittenberg@noaa.gov). Position is subject to the University's background check policy.

Essential Qualifications: The selected candidate will have a Ph.D. as well as the following (a) a strong background in climate dynamics or a related field; (b) experience using and analyzing advanced climate models and observational data sets; and (c) excellent oral and written communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications: A background in tropical Pacific climate research is preferred.

Education Required: Doctorate Degree
