The laboratory of Douglas Fearon is seeking an outstanding postdoc fellow for research on the antigens expressed by mouse and human pancreatic cancer cells using T cell receptors cloned from individual, cancer cell-reactive CD8+ T cells and ribosome profiling techniques. We are particularly interested in candidates with an interest in new approaches to cancer immunology.
The antigens expressed by cancer cells that mediate the immune responses that control cancer growth in humans are not known. Our laboratory has recently discovered that the spontaneous CD8+ T cell response to unknown cancer cell antigens in an autochthonous model of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma is capable of rapidly eliminating cancer cells once immune suppression has been relieved (Feig, et al. PNAS 2013). We suspect that the expression by cancer cells of these antigens reflects the metabolic state of these cells and, therefore, represents a “normal” cellular response. Defining the antigens would lead not only to support for this concept, but also to improved therapy of human cancer. The project will involve collaboration with a laboratory at MIT for identifying cancer cell-reactive CD8+ T cells, and the use of ribosome profiling to identify candidate antigens.

Successful candidates are expected to stand out through their ongoing original research in the broad areas of molecular, cell or cancer biology. They should either hold or be within a year from obtaining their Ph.D.
