Post-doctoral position in the area of Plant Pathway Discovery, Synthetic Biology and Biosustainable Production : Copenhagen, Denmark
Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences, Faculty of Science, University of Copenhagen
The Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences is inviting applications for a postdoc in “Identification of metabolic pathways” for production of bioactive specialised metabolites from berry fruits.
The position is for two years and available from 1 May 2014 or as soon as possible thereafter.
The candidate will join a collaborative effort between the University of Copenhagen and the Technical University of Denmark. The key research focus of the research group at the Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences on “Natural products and bioactive compounds” and “Synthetic Biology” is to elucidate pathways for formation and decoration of complex plant metabolites, in particular through enzymes of the cytochrome P450 class. We are part of a multi-national consortium comprised of industrial partners and internationally recognised research groups from 10 countries.
Job description
The successful candidate will be working on identification and engineering of biosynthetic genes and pathways for production of high-value compounds. The position will be integrated in teams of scientists working with plant biochemistry, synthetic biology and metabolic engineering. Key objectives of the project are identification of genes for key decorating enzymes and functional validation of the gene products. These will be accomplished using a combination of bioinformatics, biochemical and molecular methods such as transient heterologous expression in plant systems. The post also includes teaching.
Qualifications – selection criteria
Applicants must have a PhD degree or similar in protein biochemistry, molecular biology, biophysics, bioengineering, or synthetic biology.
Expertise within one or more of the following scientific areas is required:
- Mining of Next-Generation Sequencing RNA-Seq assemblies.
- Heterologous expression in plant systems.
- Eukaryotic cytochrome P450 enzymes.
- Phenylpropanoid pathway.
The candidate is also required to have good communication skills, to be enterprising and to possess good interpersonal skills.
Preference will be given to candidates with:
- Training from internationally leading research laboratories.
- Experience with basic analytics (HPLC).
Terms of employment
The positions are covered by the Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff.
Terms of appointment and payment accord to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State.
The starting salary is currently up to DKK 402,046 including annual supplement (plus pension up to DKK 68,750). Negotiation for salary supplement is possible.
