Postdoctoral research investigating pathogenetic mechanisms in chronic inflammatory diseases : Stockholm, Sweden
Division
The Center for Research on Inflammation and Cardiovascular Disease (CERIC) is a new Linné center
(www.ceric.se) funded by the Swedish Research Council. A postdoc position is now open for a highly
motivated scientist with an interest in understanding how the immune system contributes to development
of cardiovascular disease.

Duties
The project is focused on the role of proinflammatory lipid mediators in formation and progression of
cardiovascular diseases, especially ischemic heart diseases and abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA).
Important classes of lipid mediators include the eicosanoids (prostaglandins and leukotrienes),
sphingolipids, and endocannabinoids, all of which are targets for drug development. We aim to delineate
the role of lipid mediators in myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury as well as the initiation and
progression of aortic dilatation during AAA. In particular, we want to analyze the therapeutic potential of
agents that interfere with lipid mediator signaling in these conditions.
The project is translational and involves multiple experimental approaches, using biochemical, cell
biological, and imaging tools applied to human tissue samples and in vivo models of disease. The chosen
candidate will be trained on well-established murine models of myocardial ischemia-reperfusion and
aortic aneurysm formation.
Entry requirements
The applicant should have a strong background in experimental cardiovascular medicine and
atherosclerosis research. Experience in working with experimental and functional murine models of
cardiovascular disease is required. Basic techniques of molecular medicine and biology are also
desirable.
A person is eligible for a position as postdoctoral research fellow if he or she has obtained a PhD no
more than seven years before the last date of employment as postdoc.
Application process
An employment application must contain the following documents in English or Swedish:
1. A complete curriculum vitae, including date of the thesis defence, title of the thesis, previous
academic positions, academic title, current position, academic distinctions, and committee work
2. A complete list of publications
3. A summary of current work (no more than one page)
4. Verifications for crediting of illness, military service, work for labour unions or student
organisations, parental leave or similar circumstances
5. Verification from the thesis defence committee or the equivalent (only if the thesis defence is
scheduled within three months after the application deadline)
The application is to be submitted on the NetRecruiter system.
Karolinska Institutet is one of the world´s leading medical universities. Its mission is to contribute to the
improvement of human health through research and education. Karolinska Institutet accounts for over 40
per cent of the medical academic research conducted in Sweden and offers the country´s broadest range of
education in medicine and health sciences. Since 1901 the Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet has
selected the Nobel laureates in Physiology or Medicine.
Pursuant to the regulations of the Swedish National Archives, applications are kept on file for two years
after the appointment has gained legal force. The regulations do not apply to attachments that have been
