Postdoctoral Researcher in Chemical Oceanography : Wilhelmshaven, Germany

The Institute of Chemistry and Biology of the Marine Environment (www.icbm.de), Carl von Ossietzky Universität Oldenburg, Germany, is seeking to fill the position of an

Experienced Researcher (Postdoctoral Research Associate)

in the project PassMe to study air-sea gas exchange of climate-relevant gases. This full-time position (39,8 hours/week) is available from 01.07.2014, for 3 years, with a salary according to the German pay scale E 13 TV-L. The project PassMe is funded by the European Research Council (ERC) for 5 years with the overall objective to improve parameterizations for modelling gas exchange on a global scale. PassMe focus on the PArameterization of the Sea-Surface Microlayer Effect, and how this interfacial boundary layer between the ocean and atmosphere controls the uptake or emission of gases by the ocean. The project is based on regular field measurements, but includes also measurements in laboratory tanks and in a wind-wave tunnel.

The candidate will support the operation of a chemical laboratory for the organic analysis of seawater. The candidate will also support the design and development of field instrumentations to investigate the sea surface in-situ and to measure gas exchange rates of CO2. Furthermore, the candidate’s task will be to organize and participate in regular field measurements and sea-going expeditions.

We are seeking for candidates with a PhD degree or Master of Science with at least 4 years of equivalent research experience in oceanography, atmospheric or earth science, or a related discipline. The candidate should have an excellent research and publication record in the field of marine chemistry and/or air-sea interaction, preferably with experience in studying boundary layers. The candidate should have a strong interest in interdisciplinary and field-oriented research, familiarity with statistical data analysis, as well as good English language skills. An engineering background, or experience with the design of oceanographic field instruments, is an asset. Apart from independently conducting cutting-edge research leading to journal publications, the experienced researcher is expected to support and cooperate with early stage researchers in the research group Sea Surface. Participations in sea-going expeditions up to several weeks are required.
The University of Oldenburg is dedicated to increasing the percentage of women in science. Therefore, female candidates are particularly encouraged to apply. In accordance with Lower Saxony legal regulations (NHG §21), equally qualified female candidates will be given preference. Applicants with disabilities will be employed preferentially if equally qualified.
Alternatively, applications can be sent per mail to the Institut für Chemie und Biology des Meeres – AG Meeresoberflächen, z. Hd. Dr. Oliver Wurl, Emsstraße 20, 26382 Wilhelmshaven, Germany. Application by email is preferred. The application deadline is 30.04.2014.
