Job Description

J. Craig Venter Institute (JCVI) is seeking a highly motivated Post-Doctoral Fellow specializing in Computational Biology and Bioinformatics to join their Rockville, MD location. The Post-Doctoral Fellow will work on a host-pathogen RNA-seq project and other Human Microbiome projects. Responsibilities will include development and implementation of algorithms and statistical tools for analysis and interpretation of gene expression and -omics datasets. The Post-Doctoral Fellow will apply these methods to data generated from next-generation sequencing platforms. The Post-Doctoral Fellow is expected to be knowledgeable in taxonomic and functional analysis of sequence data, biodiversity estimation, sequence mapping and assembly, and machine learning approaches.

The successful candidate will work closely with Bioinformatics and Genomic Medicine groups at JCVI. Qualified candidates will possess a Ph.D. in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Computer Science, ecological or biological sciences or other disciplines with training and experience in computational analysis and understanding of Microbial Ecology. The eagerness and ability to write peer-reviewed publications and grant proposals is highly desired. A strong demonstrated computer programming experience, including knowledge of major programming languages: compiled (C/C++ or Java), scripting (Perl, Python or Ruby), statistical computing (R) and SQL is desirable.
