Contract: Full Time/ Fixed Term
Are you a creative, self-motivated, collaborative researcher with a passion for integrating nanomaterials into smart sensing elements? If so, we have an exciting opportunity for you to join us and advance your career by developing direct-write sensing elements in sustainable biopolymers.
Tyndall National Institute is a leading European research centre in integrated ICT hardware. We focus on solving societal challenges through deep-tech innovation in materials, devices, circuits and systems. We collaborate with industry and academic partners to transform research from atoms to systems into products in our core market areas of Communications, Agri-Tech, Energy, Environment and Health. We are an inclusive and family-friendly community of over 500 researchers, engineers, technicians, professional services and support staff, and postgraduate students.
Job Description
Within the Micro & Nano Systems (MNS) Centre at Tyndall, one of our core strengths is development and integration of materials, devices and systems for smart sensing. In collaboration with MCCI (www. mcci.ie), a large scale microelectronics technology centre hosted at Tyndall, the Nanotechnology (NTG) group at Tyndall is leading a project for direct-write integration of laser-graphitised carbon sensor elements for strain/pressure sensing and detection of volatile organic compounds. This project will leverage our core strengths in integration of nanomaterials and laser fabrication of graphene- like carbon.
Key Responsibilities
As the successful candidate, you will:
Manage the day-to-day technical progression of the project including:
Design, development, characterisation and assessment of laser-fabricated graphene sensing elements, including tactile pressure sensors and volatile organic compound sensors
Development of high-quality research outputs (technical updates, publications and patent applications).
Management of associated laboratories and infrastructure.
Collaboration and communication with project partners
Collaborate with colleagues within the Nanotechnology Group and across Tyndall to develop novel laser-fabricated graphene sensors and electronic devices
Contribute to group- and Tyndall-level activities as required
Participate in Education and Public Engagement activities, as required.
Ensure all activities are compliant with the Tyndall Quality Management system and with the required Health and Safety standards.
Carry out any additional duties as may reasonably be required within the general scope and level of the post.
Essential Criteria
To make the most of this exciting opportunity, you will need to have a PhD in Materials Science, Chemistry, Physics, Engineering or have an equivalent and relevant professional qualification or equivalent research experience.
Your research track-record in integrated nanomaterials and/or smart sensing will be impressive, and you will be passionate about working in partnership with our team to share and co-develop expertise.
You will have succeeded in self-motivated delivery of research projects at undergraduate or postgraduate level.
You have the capability and desire to work collaboratively within a team.
