Post-Doctoral Research AssociateSchool of EconomicsLocation: Canterbury

Salary: £36,386 to £40,931 per annum Grade: Grade 7 Post Type: Full Time Contract Type: Fixed Term - Ends 30/08/2026 Release Date: Friday 06 October 2023 Closing Date: 23.59 hours GMT on Sunday 05 November 2023 (unless otherwise stated) Reference: HSS-179-23-R

The School of Economics is seeking to appoint a Post-Doctoral Research Associate in macroeconomic modelling to contribute on the Nuffield Foundations Strategic Fund's project ‘ Connecting Pensions, Health and Care'.

The aim of this project is to set the foundations for future research that takes a holistic approach to the three old-age support systems, bringing together both academic and non-academic individuals from a variety of relevant disciplines and practices.

The project seeks to develop a new conceptual framework and analytical tools to analyse the complex problems these systems face. More specifically, studying what people think about various features of each of the old-age support systems and what are their attitudes towards various combinations of specific features. Existing evidence will be reviewed on how the systems are linked via the cumulative effects of the individual choices that people make at different stages of their lives (e.g. how many children to have and when, how much to save, and whether to invest in long-term care insurance) and identify what knowledge is missing and how it can be generated. Finally, the project team will develop a pilot theoretical model to assess the policy options and their effects on intra- and inter-generational inequality, supported by a better understanding of the trade-offs that people and societies make in the face of population ageing through existing literature and a series of focus groups, interviews, and a survey.

Addressing the above-mentioned aspects will enable us to initiate a policy debate which takes a holistic approach to the three old-age support systems and put together strong foundations for future research on these systems' joint sustainability.

As Post-Doctoral Research Associate, you will:

·  Contribute to and manage the development of heterogeneous life-cycle OLG models for the analysis of pensions, health, and social care

·  Undertake research activity independently and collaboratively

·  Assist in the knowledge exchange and innovation of results and the production of high-quality academic articles and reports, including presenting results in an accessible way for policymakers and the general public

To be successful in the role you will have:

·  PhD or equivalent in Economics (or near completion)

·  Knowledge of, or interest in, the healthcare system, pensions, and long- term care in the United Kingdom

·  Strong research skills in macroeconomic modelling

·  The ability to communicate effectively and enthusiastically both verbally and in writing

As a Research Associate, you will primarily work with colleagues based at the School of Economics, but will be an integral part of the Project's team. The School of Economics at the University of Kent is a research-oriented department devoted to high-quality teaching at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The school is made up of close to 40 faculty members and 30 research students.

Please note the expected start date is to be no later than 1 January 2024 which is due to funding/project restrictions. However, an earlier start date may be offered by mutual agreement.
