Research Fellow in Atmospheric Chemistry Modelling

University of Leeds

Research Fellow in Atmospheric Chemistry Modelling

Would you like to improve our understanding of wintertime air pollution? Do you have a background in atmospheric modelling? Would you like the opportunity to work with a large international team of researchers?

We seek to appoint a research fellow in atmospheric chemistry modelling within the Institute for Climate and Atmospheric Science at the University of Leeds, as part of the ALPACA-UK (AerosoL heterogeneous Processing as a source of oxidants in Cold winter Atmospheres: application to Alaska and UK) project. The ALPACA-UK project is the UK component of the international ALPACA (Alaskan Layered Pollution And Chemical Analysis) study, which involves more than 50 researchers from partner organisations across Europe and the USA. ALPACA aims to improve knowledge of sources and chemical processing of air pollution under cold, dark conditions. The successful candidate will lead regional modelling analysis of potential novel atmospheric oxidant sources occurring under limited light, low temperature conditions, based on combining model simulations with analysis of field measurements and laboratory data. You will collaborate extensively with international partners from across the project.

In this role, you will undertake and analyse regional atmospheric chemistry model simulations using the WRF-Chem modelling framework, focussing on improving model simulation of oxidants and secondary pollutant formation during wintertime in Fairbanks, Alaska and in the UK. A key focus will be on formulating and implementing new model schemes for potential formation of nitrous acid (HONO) on aerosol particles, based on novel laboratory experiments being undertaken by collaborators in the School of Chemistry as part of ALPACA-UK, and analysis of field measurements from the ALPACA-2022 field campaign in Fairbanks. Model simulations will be used to understand the potential for such processes in mediating oxidation of aerosol precursors, and in modifying the efficacy of potential emission control measures in Alaska and UK during wintertime. You will have the opportunity to work with a wide range of research groups, and to take a leading and active role in international project meetings.

You will have a PhD (or be close to completion) in atmospheric science or climate science, including experience of running and analysing numerical models and knowledge of atmospheric aerosol or gas phase chemistry. You will have a proven ability to tackle complex science problems using a combination of models and observations, and an enthusiasm to work closely with international collaborators.
