Background

The Postdoctoral Research Associate will be placed within the Research Centre for Biomedical Engineering at the Department of Engineering, School of Science and Technology. The post holder should hold relevant PhD in Biomedical Engineering or a related field. The post holder will lead research in spectroscopy, light tissue interaction and the performance of in vitro measurements utilising optical sensors. More specifically the candidate will lead the development of tissue phantom technologies and their evaluation utilising pulsatile pump protocols.

Responsibilities

The main responsibilities of the role are as follows:

Design and develop vascular tissue wrist phantoms.

Perform optical/spectroscopic characterisation of materials.

Mechanical characterisation of the phantom materials.

Contribute to the design of the in vitro system.

Perform various haemodynamic protocols utilising the in vitro system.

Data analysis using advanced computational techniques.

Write up the work, in consultation with the Principal Investigator and Head of Centre/School for journal and/or conference publications and/or reports for presentation.

Person Specification

Applicants will require:

PhD degree in Biomedical Engineering or a related field

Knowledge in spectroscopy and other optical techniques

Knowledge in light tissue interaction

Knowledge in developing tissue phantoms and in vitro pump system

Capability and experience to carry research in spectroscopy

Capability and experience in optical characterisation of materials

Capability in developing optical phantoms and performing in vitro measurements

Experience in acquisition of data and analysis using advanced computational techniques

Demonstrate an interest in and competence for research in the field of spectroscopy, tissue optics, optical sensors and vascular phantoms.
