Postdoc In Retinal Neuroscience

University Of Zurich

Lab for Retinal Cell Biology, Dept Ophthalmology

Postdoc in retinal neuroscience

100 %

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a severe complication of diabetes and is a leading cause of blindness in adults. High blood glucose levels lead to endothelial dysfunction, vascular damage and leakage of the blood-retinal barrier. Among diabetic patients the global prevalence of DR is estimated to be around 35% of which a third have vision-threatening DR. Diagnosis is often delayed until after severe damage have occurred. Current treatments can slow the progression of the disease but there is no cure and vision cannot be restored.

Your responsibilities

The successful candidate will

test therapeutic compounds in ex-vivo porcine retinas, RPE cells induced from human iPSCs and human cell lines

develop a therapeutic approach based on nanoparticles with a slow-release formulation of a compound improving blood flow and acting neuroprotective in the retina.

analyse retinal neovascularization, vascular leakage and retinal function in  vivo and/or ex vivo.

use in vivo evaluation methods including fundus photography, optical coherence tomography and recordings of the electroretinogram

investigate the hypoxic state of the retina by determining levels of HIF1A and expression of hypoxic marker genes including Vegf.

Your profile

You have a PhD in neuroscience, pharmacology or a related field and experience working with mouse models. You also have experience in cell culture, preferably including iPSCs, and common methods in molecular biology including real-time PCR, WB, IF etc. Experience with the retina is not essential but a plus.

What we offer

We offer a scientific environment in an academic research unit focusing on retinal degenerative diseases. The postdoc will be fully integrated in the team and work closely together with a technician and a small biotech company. Participation in national and international research conferences is highly encouraged.

Place of work

Wagistrasse 14, Schlieren, Schweiz

Start of employment

The position is open starting August 01, 2023. Negotiable.
