Postdoc position in Nanomaterials and Nanoscience

Are you interested in Nanomaterials and Nanoscience and can you contribute to the development of the project “Design, Fabrication and Characterization of Nanomaterials for De-metallization from Renewable Feedstocks”? Then the Department of Biological and Chemical Engineering invites you to apply for a 2-year postdoc position.

Applications are invited for a 2-year postdoc position in the field of Nanomaterials and Nanoscience at the Department of Biological and Chemical Engineering, Aarhus University, Denmark.

Renewable fuels production based on pyrolysis of biomass has the potential to play a key role in reaching the green transition targets of a 55% reduction of GHG emissions in Europe by 2030. However, conversion of pyrolysis oils into high-value jet fuels demand a hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) where the de-metallization process is of critical importance to secure a long lifetime of HDO catalyst at an industrially relevant level.

Therefore, the aim of this project is to design, synthesize, develop and fabricate nanomaterials, and test their efficiency for removal of metal ions in renewable feedstocks. Design of pretreatment process and reactors and optimization of the operation conditions to achieve all metals concentration at a desired level; as a result, improved DHO efficiency and prolonged catalysts lifetime will be obtained.

Expected start date and duration of employment

This is a 2–year position from 1 July 2022 or as soon possible.

This is a fixed-term position to end on 30 June 2024.

Job description

The postdoc’s roles in this project will be: 1) Fabricate and characterize performance of nanomaterials and nanocomposite. 2) Develop synthesis and surface treatments of nanomaterials and strategies for their solid-state assembly, elucidating the underlying processing-structure-function relationships to guide improvements in materials and device performance. 3) Design, implement, analyze and resolve synthesis or formulation problems and establish solutions leading to materials that meet desired scientific specifications. This may include scanning and transmission electron microscopy, XRD, XPS, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, or other related spectroscopies. 4) Contribute to and actively participate in the conception, design and execution of research to address defined problems. 5) Pursue independent but complementary research interests and interact with a broad spectrum of scientists internally and externally to the Lab. Collaborate with scientists in a multidisciplinary team environment to accomplish research goals.

Your profile

This section may include topics such as:

For postdocs and up: Applicants should hold a PhD in chemical engineering, biochemical engineering, materials science, applied physics or chemistry, or related fields or similar.

•Experience with fabricating, assembling, and/or organic/inorganic synthesis and characterization of nanomaterials.

•Experience in elucidating composite materials’ processing-structure-function relationships.

•Proficient verbal and written communication skills as reflected in effective presentations at seminars, meetings and/or teaching lectures.

•Initiative and interpersonal skills with desire and ability to work in a collaborative, multidisciplinary team environment.

Who we are

Description of the department/centre (the department secretariat may be able to help)

Department of Biological and Chemical Engineering is anchored in Faculty of Technical Science, Aarhus University. In the Department of Biological and Chemical Engineering, we forge sustainable technological solutions to some of the biggest challenges facing industry and society. We strive to contribute to sustainable development and to create green solutions to challenges within climate, the environment, biological processes, materials, medicine and many other areas.

Our research and development are recognized both nationally and internationally, and we are happy to work with companies to develop practical solutions that they can apply in industry. Our knowledge helps form the basis for the continued development of society, and we provide consultancy of the highest quality to government agencies and institutions.

•a well-developed research infrastructure, laboratories and access to shared equipment

•an exciting interdisciplinary environment with many national, international and industrial collaborators

•a research climate encouraging lively, open and critical discussion within and across different fields of research

•a work environment with close working relationships, networking and social activities

•a workplace characterised by professionalism, equality and a healthy work-life balance.

Place of work and area of employment

The place of work is Gustav Wieds Vej 10, 8000 Aarhus C., and the area of employment is Aarhus University with related departments.

Some part of the work (20% of working days) will be done in iNANO, Interdisciplinary Nanoscience Center, Gustav Wieds Vej 14 (Building 1590), 8000, Aarhus Denmark.

Contact information

For further information please contact Professor Zheng Guo and email: guo@bce.au.dk, phone: +45 87155528.

Deadline

Application deadline is 20 April 2022.

Application procedure

Shortlisting is used. This means that after the deadline for applications – and with the assistance from the assessment committee chairman, and the appointment committee if necessary, – the head of department selects the candidates to be evaluated. All applicants will be notified whether or not their applications have been sent to an expert assessment committee for evaluation. The selected applicants will be informed about the composition of the committee, and each applicant is given the opportunity to comment on the part of the assessment that concerns him/her self. Once the recruitment process is completed a final letter of rejection is sent to the deselected applicants.

Letter of reference

If you want a referee to upload a letter of reference on your behalf, please state the referee’s contact information when you submit your application. We strongly recommend that you make an agreement with the person in question before you enter the referee’s contact information, and that you ensure that the referee has enough time to write the letter of reference before the application deadline.

Unfortunately, it is not possible to ensure that letters of reference received after the application deadline will be taken into consideration.
