The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment. Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance. : Are you passionate about your work and dream of utilizing state-of-the-art experimental facilities to explore complex problems? Join our dynamic team and solve significant issues for our nation's security! You could be the Postdoctoral Appointee we are seeking to join our diverse team. You will work with the Dynamic Material Properties Department to experimentally measure material properties at extreme conditions. You will help support a wide range of experiments at our gas gun and pulsed power facilities as needed. You will collaborate with other team members to design and analyze dynamic material experiments, design and implement new diagnostics, and make important material property measurements! On any given day, you may be called on to: + Apply existing or develop new capabilities for measuring the thermodynamic and constitutive response of various metals, polymers, geological materials, and/or energetics. + Perform hydrodynamic computer simulations for the design and analysis of experiments, as well as model calibration and validation. + Collaborate with internal and external scientists on research in the broad areas of dynamic material properties and high energy density science. + Contribute to the scientific community through the presentation at international conferences and publication in peer-reviewed journals of your research.

  Required:

+ You will have a PhD in the physical sciences, engineering, material science or a closely related discipline and a bachelor's in science, technology, engineering or mathematics. (PhD is required to start) + Technical competency in one or more of the following areas as demonstrated through publications in refereed journals: shock physics, high energy density physics, high speed diagnostics, high pressure physics, geophysics, or material science + Able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance

  Desired:

+ Excellent written and oral communication skills as demonstrated in technical publications and presentations + Experience working in a collaborative team environment + Experience with experiments using activity level work such as; high-voltage systems, laser diagnostics, x-ray sources, and gas guns + Experience with high speed diagnostic instrumentation such as laser interferometry (VISAR and or PDV), streak and/or framing cameras, digitizers, x-ray diffraction, pyrometry, flash x-ray generators. + Working knowledge of Matlab or other scientific computing script

  Department Description:

The Dynamic Materials Properties Department at Sandia National Laboratories (Department 1646) performs experimental measurements of dynamic material properties at high pressures, including material's equations of state, phase boundaries, and constitutive properties. Experiments are performed with a variety of drivers, from high velocity gas guns to the most powerful pulsed-power facility in the world, the 26 million ampere Z facility. The focus of the department is dynamic material properties experiments using both high-pressure shock waves and shockless compression. A particularly exciting area of emerging interest is the study of material properties in regions of phase space that are both off-Hugoniot and off the principal isentrope. The department is responsible for designing, executing, diagnosing, and analyzing dynamic materials properties experiments on the Z facility, and at Sandia National Laboratories Dynamic Integrated Compression Experimental (DICE) and Shock Thermodynamic Applied Research (STAR) facilities.
