亥姆霍兹波茨坦中心地球科学、数学、物理学或相关领域博士后招聘
Area of research:
Scientific / postdoctoral posts
Job description:
The Helmholtz Centre Potsdam – GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences is the national centre for geosphere research. As a member of the Helmholtz Association we are part of the largest German scientific organization. With around 1,300 employees (including our guests) we develop a sound understanding of the systems and processes of the solid Earth as well as strategies and options for action to face global change and its regional impacts, to understand natural hazards and reduce associated risks, and to assess the influence of humans on the Earth’s system. As a partner in Geo.X, the GFZ has access to an excellent network of other geoscience institutions in Potsdam and Berlin. This largest regional concentration of geoscientific competence in Europe offers first-class cooperation and development opportunities. For section 4.7 "Earth Surface Process Modelling" (department 4 “Geosystems”), we are looking for a:
Reference Number 4227
We are seeking a postdoctoral research scientist to develop numerical models of debris flow initiation and integrate them into a landscape evolution model. The postdoctoral research scientist will focus on parameterizing and validating models of different debris flow initiation mechanisms (e.g., firehose effect and bank failure). They will then work with a collaborative team to incorporate these initiation processes into models of debris-flow erosion and deposition. Depending on the candidate’s background and interests, the project could also involve applying the model to different study sites and examining the influence of climate and tectonics on the frequency and magnitude of debris-flow activity. Previous debris flow or sediment transport-focused research experience would be an asset but is not strictly required, and we encourage potential candidates with differing backgrounds to apply. The successful candidate should have the vision and ability to participate in collaborative and interdisciplinary research activities and discussions within our research group and with local and international collaborators. Researchers in the Earth Surface Process Modelling section work on a broad range of themes and come from widely different backgrounds. We are committed to a collaborative environment to ensure that members can rely on each other’s support. We value the development of meaningful skills and experience for the personal careers of our members. We believe that a diverse team is a stronger team, and we encourage applications from candidates of all gender, race, sexual orientation, age, religion, disability, and national or ethnic identities.
Your responsibilities:
develop and calibrate numerical models for different debris flow initiation mechanisms
incorporate these models into a landscape evolution model
collaborate closely with internal and external partners

Your qualifications:
Master’s degree and PhD in Earth Science, Mathematics, Physics or a related field
demonstrated advanced knowledge in the development of numerical models
