Position SummaryThe Postdoctoral Research Associate at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) within the Department of Biological Sciences investigates the ecology of seagrass and associated communities in the mid-Atlantic region of the United States, with a focus on advancing our understanding of controls on species distributions and associated ecosystem functions. Specific core duties include: Analysis of large-scale datasets of seagrass and associated macrofaunal communities (epifauna, nekton/fish) through both space and time Perform statistical analysis to explain changes in animal and plant communities over time Conduct field work contributing to continued monitoring of seagrass and associated macrofaunal communities Mentoring graduate students Disseminate scientific results through publications and presentations Develop new independent research consistent with the goals of the Coastal Ecosystems Ecology Laboratory group
Required QualificationsEducation: PhD in a field related to environmental science (e.g. marine science, biology, geology) at the time of appointment Competencies: Strong quantitative skills, particularly statistical analysis Programming experience working with large datasets in R Strong scholarship record commensurate with experience Experience: Demonstrated experience conducting experimental work or observational survey work in coastal or estuarine systems
Preferred QualificationsCompetencies: Knowledge of seagrass community ecology Knowledge of the ecology and taxonomy of seagrass associated fish and epifaunal communities Knowledge of community and metacommunity ecology Competencies in any of the following analyses – generalized linear models, mixed effects models, multivariate data analysis, structural equation modeling, time series modeling Experience: Experience analyzing spatio-temporal community datasets using R AAUS Scientific Diver Dive work measuring seagrass and associate fauna
